Prioritize Your Way to Creating Impact
Oct 16, 2025

There’s a universal truth I’ve seen across companies of every size, from global tech firms to mid-market service providers: projects fail not because of bad people, but because of bad priorities.
In one engagement, the CIO showed me a spreadsheet with 27 “active” projects. When I asked, “Which five matter most?” the room went quiet. It wasn’t that they didn’t care; it’s that no one had ever asked them to make the hard choices.
Portfolio management, at its best, is the art of saying no to good ideas so you can say yes to the right ones. Without clear business cases, objective metrics, or a defined intake process, everything looks important, which means nothing truly is.
The first step in fixing this is implementing a simple idea funnel. Capture ideas, vet them, weigh them against strategic goals, and assign priority based on impact, feasibility, and ROI. You don’t need a dozen frameworks to do this, you just need the courage to put structure around your chaos.
If your PMO’s project list looks like a grocery receipt, you’re probably tracking activity, not achievement.
